2017 Golden Globe Nominations Dominated by HBO; ‘La La Land’ Reaps Favorable Nods

The nominees for the 7th annual Golden Globes Awards have been released and many have been shocked with how the old order for TV recognition had been restored.

Less than a month before the ceremony, the nominations were announced by Don Cheadle, Laure Dern, and Anna Kendrick via NBC.

HBO led the nominations for the networks with 14 among its programs. FX comes in second with nine, while Netflix, Amazon, ABC, and AMC are tied for the third place with five nominations each.

For the second year a row, “Game of Thrones” is again nominated for the Best Drama Series award category. While the HBO hit series is known to wipe out the Emmy Awards for how many years now, the show has yet to win its first Golden Globes award.

The show surprisingly received two nominations only, the other being a Best Supporting Actress for Lena Headey for her portrayal of Cersei Lannister. “Game of Thrones” is currently slated to enter its penultimate season next year.

It is joined in by newcomers, “The Crown.” “Westworld,” and “Stranger Things” as well as “This Is Us” in one of the most coveted categories.

HBO’s pilot season of “Westworld” took three nominations including Best Actress for Evan Rachel Wood and Best Supporting Actress for Thandie Newton, who portrays Dolores Abernathy and Madam Maeve, respectively, in the TV series.

Wynona Ryder from “Stranger Things” also received a nod for Best Actress in a TV Drama for her portrayal of Joyce Byers along with Caitriona Balfe of “Outlander,” Keri Russel of “The Americans” and Claire Foy of “The Crown.”

NBC’s breakout drama “This Is Us” made history for the network by becoming the first new broadcast drama to land a best series nomination since “Heroes” in 2006. The show’s stars Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz are first-time nominees in the Best Supporting Actress category as well.

FX’s true crime anthology “The People v O.J Simpson: American Crime Story,” which also made waves during the Emmys, nabbed five nominations including a Best Actor nod to Sterling K. Brown.

Another critically-acclaimed mini-series for the network, “The Night Manager,” starring Tom Hiddleston, received four nods.

Variety notes that while the nominations for this year have been shocking because of how deserving most of them are, the HFPA still missed out some important programs and people.

Topping that list is “House of Cards,” the Netflix series entering its fifth season which had its leads, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, win the Golden Globes. The show also had previous Best Drama nominations.

The much-awaited Gilmore Girls revival, “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” also shocked many when the show didn’t get any nominations.

Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” surprisingly did not get any recognition from the Golden Globes – a first time since its run. Fans of the show are questioning why given the most recent season was considered the most moving one to date.

“Mr. Robot” also shockingly received just one nod, a Best Actor for lead star Rami Malek, while Taraji P. Henson, best known for her portrayal of Cookie Lyon in “Empire” appears to have been forgotten as well.

The nominations also proved that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is loyal to comedy picks. The CW’s Rachel Bloom and Gina Rodriguez, who are lead stars for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'”and “Jane the Virgin,” respectively are once again nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy category.

After two years of snubs, “Black-ish” finally got its first Best Comedy nomination. Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross also received nods for their performances in the comedy.
