General Motors has unveiled the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro on May 16 at the Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan with the American carmaker beaming with pride and confidence that the sixth generation muscle car would regain the top spot in the sports car segment when it hits the dealerships towards the end of 2015.
The American carmaker also made positive announcement regarding its Lansing Grand River assembly plant where the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro shall be built. GM officials, plant managers and employees have stated in unison that production work could start this fall, details the Detroit Free Press.
GM CEO Mary Barra is highly optimistic that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro would not just appeal to current Camaro owners, but will also attract a new batch of sports car enthusiasts, which is what the company is aiming for.
She explained that the new sports car will be something that even current Camaro owners will want and surely be desired by those who have not had the opportunity of owning a Camaro in the past.
Barra said that every vehicle that GM rolls out into the market, they want it to win the segment and they have high hopes that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro would do such in the sports car segment.
A likely top-seller
The fifth generation Camaro built in GM’s Oshawa assembly plant in Ontario, Canada starting in mid-2009 has outsold the Mustang for five straight years. GM announced that it has sold more than 500,000 of the units since then.
The carmaker also disclosed that its subsidiary Chevrolet, just like what it did to the fifth generation model in 2009, will unveil plenty of variants and accessories to the 2016 Camaro to keep the new model fresh in the years come.
But Barra is quite optimistic that the sixth generation of the Camaro really has what it takes to surpass the might of the current fifth generation Camaro.
She said that the unveiling of the new Camaro reflects GM’s commitment not only to compete in the market but most importantly to thrive and lead in the marketplace that it has been so accustomed to doing then and now.
An excellent platform
The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro was based on the same rear-wheel-drive platform used in the development of the Cadillac ATS, which speaks about how excellently built the sports car is.
It is actually 300 pounds lighter compared to the previous Camaro model because light materials were used instead including titanium and aluminum.
In terms of power under the hood, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will sport a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which is capable of exuding maximum strength of 275 horsepower. But buyers can still go for the more powerful V6 or V8 engine if they so choose.
