Sony Starts Rolling Out Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on Xperia Z Devices

Contrary to reports early this month that Sony will be rolling out the Android 5.1 Lollipop on most of its Xperia Z devices, Sony is just rolling out the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update to some of its devices including the Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z1 Compact, the Xperia Z3 Dual, and the Xperia Z Ultra.

Typical with Android update roll outs, the release is implemented in stages, which means other users may get the update ahead of the rest but everything will be done over-the-air or OTA.

Sony revealed that users of Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia C3 will also get the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update next week, according to the Australian edition of the International Business Times.

Recent reports say that the Xperia Z1 will get the Android 5.1 Lollipop firmware and OS update first in April to be to be followed by the Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition as well as other devices including the Xperia Z, the Xperia ZR, the Xperia ZL, the Xperia Z1s, the Xperia, Z3v, the Xperia Z3 Tablet, the Xperia Tablet Z and the Xperia Z22 Tablet, noted Venture Capital Post.

In addition to the bug fixes, performance tweaks, and stability improvements to be brought about reportedly by the Android 5.1 Lollipop, Xperia Z owners are also looking forward to the launching of the latest flagship smartphones from the Sony this year.

Sony is expected to launch its latest flagship smartphones soon although the Japanese smartphone maker has yet to come out with a specific release date for it.

Reports have it that in addition to the Sony Xperia Z4, there is also the Xperia Z4 Ultra. There are also rumors suggesting that the flagship smartphones from Sony will be officially launched during the IFA 2015 event to be held in Berlin, Germany from September 4 to 9.

New features

Just like the improvements made by the OS on the Nexus and Motorola devices, Android 5.1 Lollipop will bring a host of new features to Sony Xperia Z devices.

The firmware update enables faster boot time, which is one of the most prominent improvements of the Android 5.1 Lollipop.

There is also the Device Protection feature, which enables users to secure their devices against theft and unauthorized use by locking the device unless the original user’s Google account is opened. The good thing about this feature is that it cannot be removed even if the device is reset.

The newest Lollipop also supports HD Audio which can be utilized for as long as the devices are compatible and there is strong wi-fi signal.

Under Android 5.1, users can drag down the top of the screen to open the quick settings and enable access to the flashlight, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other functions quickly. The Android 5.1 also has the capability to remember the closest Wi-Fi connection, which the device shall prioritize.

There is also the priority mode, which enables users to set which notifications can be use with audible sounds. Likewise, it is easy to turn these off since they are automatically switched off when the alarm goes off, which means there is no need for human intervention, or hardly at all.
