Samsung has just launched its latest flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy s6, during the Galaxy Unpacked press event on March 1, one day before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 in Barcelona, Spain.
The Korean tech company stayed true to its promise of unveiling a groundbreaking flagship smartphone with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and it was only fitting that Samsung had the theme ‘relentless innovation’ for its launching event, cites MSN Money.
The Galaxy S6 was launched along with the Galaxy S6 Edge by Samsung President and CEO J.K. Shin. The company top honcho said that Samsung was hesitant to introduce new features to the device until it was really certain that it would worked well and that consumers would find it really useful.
J.K. Shin said that the new Samsung Galaxy S6 is part of the company’s renewed commitment towards making the best-in-class smartphone and the best-in-class design.
He also announced that the Korean company will be officially releasing the Samsung Galaxy S6 in the market initially in 20 countries on April 11. Release of the flagship smartphone in other countries will subsequently follow in latter months.
Groundbreaking features
The Samsung Galaxy S6 sports a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, with Gorilla Glass 4. Consistent with its teasers, it has a curved class that covers the three sides of the smartphone. It is also very slim too with a 6.8 millimeter breadth.
Samsung has finally adapted a metal design for the Galaxy S6 just like its competitors in the smartphone market but it did better by using a metal that is 50% stronger than the ones being used in other smartphones.
For the first time in its flagship smartphone, Samsung is now using a built-in battery for the Galaxy S6 which is capable of fast-charging. A 10-minute charge would be sufficient to use the phone for four hours. Samsung also claims that it can charge from 0 to 100 in half the time than an iPhone 6.
More importantly, it is also capable of wireless charging that is compatible with both WPC and WMC charging standards. The smartphone also uses a 2550 mAH lithium battery.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 features a 20-megapixel rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with real-time HDR.
The latest flagship smartphone of Samsung is using an Exynos chip which is 20% percent faster in terms of performance compared with other chipsets. It also comes in three storage variants of 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB.
The device shall also come with Samsung Pay, the company’s own version of mobile payment system.
The company has likewise announced that Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will also be compatible with a new model of the Samsung Gear VR headset.
Not the first device with a curved screen
While it looks groundbreaking alright, the curved screen on the Samsung Galaxy S6 is not the first time that a smartphone or a mobile device will feature such a display. Samsung already used the technology when it launched the Galaxy Note Edge early last year.
But the curved screen of the tablet covers only two sides and not three that is now being featured in the Samsung Galaxy S6.
The screens on the side of the curved display of the Samsung Galaxy S6 can actually be used as ticker which is useful for displaying notifications and other information down the side.
