The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the Korean tech giant’s flagship smartphone of 2012, regarded as the fastest phone in the world then, in terms of processing data and commands.
Samsung has officially upgraded the OS of the Galaxy S3 up to Android 4.4 KitKat and it stopped updating from there. So when the Android 5.0 Lollipop was rolled out in October last year, the Samsung Galaxy S3 was already excluded, given that the device was more than two years old then.
However, developers have come up with custom ROM based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, Android 5.1 Lollipop, and the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. But those were all unofficial updates as far as Samsung is concerned.
Considering the age factor, it is important for users to upgrade the mobile operating system of their smartphones to turn their units not only relevant in terms of current apps, but also to make it the best it can always be with latest features.
Holding its own against other flagships
The same holds true for the Samsung Galaxy S3. While more than three years is relatively old by today’s smartphone standards, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is still one of the better handsets in the market today. It can still hold its own against some of the current flagships of other companies.
It may no longer be as powerful since the processors of today’s mobile devices have significantly improved a great deal, but the Samsung Galaxy S3 still banks on its excellent and superb performance to keep its loyal and sentimental users quite satisfied with it.
When it was launched in 2012 as Samsung’s flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S3 featured the most excellent smartphone camera, which was the best in its class at that time.
It was also one of the most expensive handsets back then. And it’s redeeming factors were the fact that its features and performance were really superb.
The Galaxy S3 featured a groundbreaking concept when it was launched back in 2012. It also carried with it a stunning 4.8-inch HD screen, a superior and good quality 8-megapixel camera, and a microSD slot for expanding its external storage capacity.
Marshmallow option for Galaxy S3 users
Because Samsung has already excluded the Galaxy S3 from the Lollipop update, it no longer came as a surprise to most of its users that the handset was also not included in the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update when it was officially rolled out by Google last month.
But it does not mean that Samsung Galaxy S3 users will not be able to enjoy the sweet cottony taste of the Marshmallow.
Accordingly, XDA developers have already released the Android Open Source Project for the Marshmallow which means that a number of custom ROMs will finally roll out to the Samsung Galaxy S3 in the near future. At the moment, only an Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based custom ROM for the Nexus 4 has become available, notes Nseavoice.
However, Galaxy S3 users will have to prepare their units by rooting it with the SuperSU beta version 2.51.
Based on the current progress of the XDA, it is likely that the Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based custom ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be released in the first quarter of next year.
About to be banned in the US
Meanwhile, there are reports coming out that the Samsung Galaxy S3 and all the older smartphone models of the Korean tech giant will be banned soon from the US market.
This will apparently come as a result of the decision of a top patent court favoring Apple’s appeal in its patent war against Samsung, details the Inquisitr.
Accordingly, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that Samsung shall no longer be allowed from selling the older models of its popular Galaxy smartphones in America as its legal battle with Apple over copyright infringement continues.
In May 2014, a jury found out that Samsung copied three patents found on Apple’s iPhones including quick links, side-to-unlock, and the spellcheck.
Subsequently, Apple petitioned to ban the Samsung Galaxy S3 and older models of Samsung smartphones that have and continue to use those patents.
