The “Power Rangers” franchise will be making a comeback into the big screen next year and rumor has it that Lionsgate is already prepared to welcome its success. Reports say that the studio has already planned potential sequels in the future.
Speaking to Variety, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said they are really feeling optimistic about how viewers will accept the upcoming “Power Rangers” film.
He adds that there is a potential that should the film become a box-office success, it could spawn six to seven more films.
The executive went on to say that his optimism for the franchise grew after the positive response of fans to the new ranger suit design was released early last month.
Sharing the excitement is the original Pink Ranger Amy Jo. She says that the reboot could benefit from a loyal audience that is now two decades older.
Despite the executives expressing their excitement for the upcoming film, Lionsgate still hasn’t greenlighted a sequel to the upcoming film.
Feltheimer and film chiefs Rob Friedman and Patrick Waschberg just wanted everyone to know that Lionsgate, along with Saban Entertainment, is very open to the idea of the film turning into a fully homegrown franchise.
Also, some critics have expressed their thoughts on the idea of the franchise having seven more films under its belt.
Vogel Capital Management CEO Hal Vogel said it was delusions as young audience nowadays have far more entertainment options than they did two decades ago.
Vogel adds that five films alone already feels like a stretch. He emphasized that doing three consecutive movies in a row that will hit the box-office success mark is already difficult, what more with four or more.
“Power Rangers” director Dean Israelite told Entertainment Weekly that the film will be about the kids’ transition or their metamorphosis.
Israelite adds that the suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by the Rangers with their energy and spirit.
Production designer Andrew Menzies said that it was tricky finding a new style for the new league of Power Rangers. He further explained that the superheroes transform into alien costumes that grow on them and is not man-made.
Menzies adds that his design of the new Ranger suits is meant to appeal to a more mature audience at the same time gain a new following for the franchise.
Feltheimer then expressed his hope that the upcoming film will become a hit franchise just like the “Twilight” saga and “The Hunger Games” films.
The upcoming “Power Rangers” movie is expected to bring a modern twist to the old-school superheroes. The upcoming film will tell the origin of the superhero group.
The film stars a new batch of superheroes from Angel Grove. Becky G will portray Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy, and Naomi Scott will play Pink Ranger Kimberly.
Back in February, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that “The Hunger Games” star Elizabeth Banks will join the cast and is set to portray the classic role of villainess Rita Repulsa.
Repulsa is the evil sorceress during the original “Power Rangers” era and has been constantly plaguing Earth with invading creatures in an attempt to take down the Rangers, but was never successful in gaining absolute power.
The film set to hit theaters on March 24, 2017. Initially, filming was set to begin last January but it was rescheduled and began a month later in Vancouver. Last month, it was reported that filming was complete and the film is now in post-production.
Now that filming has wrapped up, fans are eagerly awaiting Lionsgate to release the first trailer of the film anytime soon.
