The two-part finale of Season 3 of the British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” will air on Showtime on June 19.
Although nothing has been confirmed as of this time, there are rumors saying that the third season may actually be the last for “Penny Dreadful” because of its average ratings during the entire Season 3, notes the Parent Herald.
Last year, even before Season 2 aired its finale, Showtime has already renewed “Penny Dreadful” for Season 3. But it does not appear to be the case this time around, pushing speculations that the show might not be renewed for Season 4.
Based on statistics, “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 has received only a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 years old viewer demographic, which is not really as stellar as the other TV shows.
But many of its loyal fans continue to insist that the TV series is one of the best shows on TV these days and that Showtime shall be making a grave mistake if it cancels “Penny Dreadful” after its third season.
More stories to tell
There are also rumors saying that “Penny Dreadful” would eventually be renewed for Season 4 because the TV series still has a lot of stories to tell.
In fact, based on the synopsis of the two-part finale entitled “Perpetual Night” and “The Blessed Dark,” Ethan, played by Josh Hartnett, has yet to rescue Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, from Dracula.
Many are speculating that it could be made by the showrunner as the cliffhanger for Season 3.
However, there is also a possibility that Ethan might rescue Vanessa during the last two episodes of “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 as the teaser trailer for episode 8 showed Ethan and Sir Malcolm Murray, played by Timothy Dalton, already returning to London to look for Frankenstein, played by Rory Kinnear.
The same teaser also hinted that Lily will also share a heartbreaking story about Brona Croft, played by Billie Piper.
Girl power takes the spotlight
In the seventh episode of “Penny Dreadful” Season 3, entitled “Ebb Tide,” girl power took center stage as it actually featured splendid performances by Eva Green and Billie Piper, who once again showed her commanding presence in the episode despite starting off on the wrong foot, or so it appeared.
Billie Piper as Lily has only grown stronger as a character since the early days following her re-animation when she had no memory of her past and was easily manipulated by Victor Frankenstein, played by Harry Treadaway, details the A.V. Club.
However, Lily in “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 is already beyond all that and also beyond the world of men. She now has a different vision for the world.
In particular, Billie Piper was very electrifying in the scene where she stands atop the table and exhorts her forces to rise up.
For her part, Vanessa is also ready to rise up. Her reunion with Ethan and the other takes place only in the spiritual realm, as they are still physically separated by thousands of miles, which would change come the two-part Season 3 finale.
But she still has Caitriona who always drops by to let viewers know that everything people were told about vampires is wrong. The problem with Vanessa is that she allowed the great seducer that is Dracula to appeal to her dark side and urges her to let it come forth.
Whether there will be a resolution to this during the two-part Season 3 finale or not, fans will know it come June 19.
Back in the fifth episode of “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 that was aired on May 29, Ethan Talbot (formerly Chandler) faced his demon with the help of Hecate, played by Sarah Greene, but it seems that the latter is more interested in bringing the man-wolf to the dark side than leading him to the light.
penny dreadful should be renewed for a forth season. it is by far one of the best casted and acted series on tv today. penny dreadful, ray donavan and shameless are the reason i have showtime. how about we get excited over a season 4 premier date instead of dread that the show might not make it. glass half full people.
It is the BEST show currently on TV…..It would be a shame if it doesn’t get a proper ending…
have you even seen the ratings for other showtime shows. Penny has basically no lead in either. And this is premium cable. not regular network where a show airs only one time. On showtime you can watch it always. You really have no clue what you are talking about its ratings is basically the same as last year also
If they don’t renew, TV is dead to me. Why is it the smart, cultured, brilliant shows with the best writing and acting are always the shows that can’t survive while garbage like Game of Thrones with no original thought carries on and people can’t stop talking about it? Maybe the issue if networks and studios continue to market to the lowest common denominator and have driven away smarter audiences; why not start to reverse this and bring them back? I never had difficultly finding brilliant television in the 90s when SUBSTANCE was the driving force in making a show successful instead of tits and ass and cheap shock value tactics.
Penny Dreadful is extremely high brow, drawing from traditional literature; the show takes on a whole new level and is filled with Easter eggs if you’ve read the novels the characters are pulled from, and the poetry constantly referenced. Top that with Logan as the sole writer for the series, presenting an unmatched consistency in the writing never seen on tv, and the best cast ever assembled, topped with the perfection that is Eva Green…but people aren’t watching, because audiences are too stupid. You see this even in books which are greatest dumbed down and simplified in order to attract low grade knuckle draggers to literature.
Can we please stop dumbing down society and start celebrating INTELLIGENCE again? Wouldn’t that be nice?
This is the most disappointing news. Homeland and Penny Dreadful are the only reason I watch Showtime. Once they are both gone, I doubt I will watch again. I don’t know who you are listening to, but it’s not people with an appreciation for amazing acting and great storytelling.
