The fifth episode of the British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” was aired on Showtime on May 29 and it focused on the adventures of Ethan Talbot (formerly Chandler), played by Josh Hartnett, and Hecate, played by Sarah Greene.
Ethan faced his demon during the previous episode with the help of Hecate but it seems that the latter is more interested in bringing the man-wolf to the dark side than leading him to the light.
But based on their conversations, Ethan and Hecate have a lot of things in common including being forced to serve masters whom they do not want even at their young ages.
They also run into Sir Malcolm Murray, played by Timothy Dalton, and Kaetenay, played by Wes Studi, before Inspector Rusk arrives and drag all of them to Jared Talbot, who happens to be Ethan’s father, details the Parent Herald.
Who is the real beast?
During the final moment of the episode, Jared Talbot aimed a gun at Ethan and pulled the trigger, leaving it as a cliffhanger for the next episode.
Ethan is one of the main protagonists of “Penny Dreadful” so most of the viewers think he will come out of it alive. As to who would extricate him and company out of the mess that Jared Talbot put them into, is yet to be known.
Episode 6 of “Penny Dreadful” is entitled “No Beast So Fierce” and it is likely that Ethan would finally square off with his father Jared. As to who between him and his father is being referred to in the episode title as the beast will be known by fans when it airs on Showtime on June 5.
Incidentally, the trailer for the upcoming episode 6 of “Penny Dreadful” revealed that the TV series shall re-focus on Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, as she meets a new ally in Caitriona Hartdegen, played by Perdita Weeks.
Caitriona has been talking about the first vampire and referred to him as a seducer. She said that the creature has taken on several identities over the years.
Vanessa then tells Caitriona that she is looking for Dracula in London. Eventually, Vanessa was able to convince Caitriona to help her find the first vampire. She wants redemption and the only way she can do that is to finally defeat Dracula who previously seduced her too.
No Vanessa Ives in episode 5
Fans felt shortchanged when the fifth episode of “Penny Dreadful” Season 3, entitled “This World is Our Hell,” became a full hour without Vanessa Ives.
However, episode 5 had sort of a redemption as it provided much-needed context for the vague apocalyptic rumblings through the first half of the season by ably filling the gaps in Ethan’s back story and clarifying his relationship to Kaetenay as well as their real father Jared Talbot, played by guest star Brian Cox, details A.V. Club.
Other than the show’s characters in the American Southwest, the only regulars who appeared in the episode were Frankenstein and Jekyll.
The two scientists focus on their efforts to extend the effect of Jekyll’s experimental serum which appeared to be going well. However, the rift on their collaborative relationship is already starting to show.
The major disagreement of Frankenstein and Jekyll over the fundamental nature of good and evil continues to reveal itself. Victor scoffs at the idea of ever using the formula on himself while Jekyll disagrees because of his different motivation.
When their test subject named Balfour finally awakens, he has no memory of his madness or his treatment but his laid-back demeanor was enough to convince Frankenstein that he has achieved another scientific breakthrough.
Episode writer Andrew Hinderaker and director Paco Cabezas did their best to make the revelations during the episode as dramatic as possible. Despite their efforts, there was still no disguising the fact that it was a set-up episode, designed to unleash a great deal of information that viewers needed to understand the conflicts that shall power the rest of the season.
