Amid rumors of its impending cancellation, the second season of the American crime drama TV series “Narcos” appears on track for a premiere this coming August on Netflix.
The presumption is based on the show’s Season 1 premiere which happened on August 28 last year. Despite reports that the show is having problems finding the right showrunner, it seems that filming is proceeding and the two persons recently tapped to temporarily fill in the shoes of executive producers appear to be doing just fine.
When former showrunner Adam Fierro left the show before the end of Season 1, he has reportedly written the script for Season 2.
Fierro was actually the second creator of the show following Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro as the first pair, before eventually handing it over to Chris Brancato, notes the Vine Report.
Eric Newman and Jose Padilha, who were both part of the production team, were eventually tapped to replace Chris Brancato while the producers look for a suitable replacement.
A death in the offing
Season 1 of “Narcos” actually covered 15 years of the life of Columbia drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, played by Brazilian actor Wagner Moura.
So it is likely that the second season of the hit Netflix series will feature his death since the show is to cover only 18 months from the time that Escobar escaped La Catedral early in 1992 to his death in his hometown of Medellin late in 1993, details Breathecast.
In a recent interview, Eric Newman confirmed that Pablo Escobar will meet his demise in Season 2, explaining that it is part of the design of the show. He added that the death of Escobar is not something that they can change because stretching that out beyond another season would be disingenuous of them. They would also alter true events in the process.
He also explained that the story of Pablo Escobar was always designed to have an ending. But if they had a choice or they could find a way, they would love to keep Escobar alive and keep Wagner on the critically-acclaimed show.
The other root of the cancellation rumors
The first reason why “Narcos” is hounded by cancellation rumors is because of its constantly-changing showrunners.
And the second one is due to the show’s plotline itself. With the impending demise of Pablo Escobar in the second season of “Narcos,” fans and critics believe that the TV series will not have much to go on to for Season 3 and beyond.
However, Eric Newman assured fans and viewers of “Narcos” that there are a number of things that can happen on the show after the death of Escobar.
He added that they have not committed to one or the other but he said that there are obviously a lot of other stories in the drug cartel world that continue on beyond Escobar.
Reports have it that the TV series will shift to telling the story of the law enforcement’s continued war with the other drug cartels in Colombia, including the infamous Cali Cartel, after the death of Escobar.
Going back to the current production of Season 2 of the TV series, latest reports about “Narcos,” other than the rumors that it will be cancelled for Season 2, indicate that actor Eric Lange of “The Bridge” has been taken in as a series regular and he shall be portraying the role of CIA Special Agent Stechner.
Stechner will work alongside DEA operatives in Medellin, Columbia. He will be joining DEA Agent Javier Pena, played by Pedro Pascal, and DEA Agent Steve Murphy, played by Boyd Holbrook, in getting into the good graces of the Columbian drug lord and Medellin cartel leader Pablo Escobar.
