Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Rumored to be Weaker than Surface Pro 3

Recent reports on the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, the latest laptop/tablet combo from the Redmondian tech company, indicate that the device will come out in July or earlier.

And if reports about its new and innovative features are true, it is likely that the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 will become the most interesting tablet to be launched this 2015 unless Apple comes out with really something spectacular with its rumored iPad Pro.

According to initial speculations, the laptop/tablet combo from Microsoft will come in two size variants – the 12-inch display model and the 14-inch screen variant.

Both versions however shall have a 2160 x 1440–pixel resolution, which is just a tad lower than the resolution of the new Apple MacBook launched on March 9 featuring a 2304 x 1440-pixel resolution.

Less powerful but efficient

However, latest reports indicate that the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is supposedly less powerful than the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 currently in the market.

News Every Day cites that the new laptop/tablet combo will be more energy efficient than its predecessor but it has apparently traded it off with its performance.

The report explained that the Surface Pro 4 has dropped the Haswell Dual-Core i5 and i7 Intel processors in favor of the new Intel Core M Broadwell chip, which is the same processor used by the new Apple MacBook and several other ultra-slim and fan-less laptops.

Despite being new, the Intel Core M Broadwell chip is obviously less powerful when compared to the Haswell Dual-Core i5 or i7 processors, which the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 uses.

However, the positive uptake on the Broadwell processor is that it is more energy efficient than the i5 or i7 chips and is quantified to have a 30% energy efficiency.

A Surface Pro 4 mini

New reports also hinted that Microsoft is probably working on a new Surface Pro 4 mini model which reportedly will be powered by an Intel Atom 64-bit processor.

The processor will be referred to as Cherry Trail and shall focus on the battery management, graphics quality, and performance of the smaller version of the Surface Pro 4. No other detail has been made available regarding the reported device, although it is possible that Microsoft could launch it simultaneously with the Surface Pro 4 in July or earlier.

Accordingly, Microsoft Surface Pro 4 will come out with the Windows 10 built in to it already and shall become the American company’s first flagship device for the laptop/tablet build of the new operating system and will become the perfect example for Microsoft’s term called ‘Continuum.’

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 vs Microsoft Surface Pro 3

But then, if the program launching for Windows 10 does not proceed according to plan, the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 could actually come out with a built-in Windows 8.1 for OS and will just have a free upgrade to Windows 10.

  1. lower the freak’n resolution.

I’m not wanting to watch HD videos on a SP3 (or 4!) I want to WORK.

Remoting into other machines is nigh impossible when you’re resolution makes icons the size of grains of sand.

HD would be fine if other computers (especially MS terminal services) could account for it – but as of now there are many steps required in getting things functioning in a useful way.

    1. You can lower the resolution to whatever you like, then save that as a profile. Then with one click, you can have the lower resolution for work, and then click back to the higher resolution to play.

  2. This actually doesn’t surprise me at all. The fact that they can say cut of 10% of the performance of the previous generation but run it fan less. This benefits more users more of the time then the power users that are maxing the thing out. If you are maxing a surface out… you should be looking at a Desktop or different laptop.

  3. I keep seeing comparisons to the screens on the two devices, but they all fail to mention the most important difference in that the Surface Pro screen is a touchscreen, not just a boring static do nothing screen. Not to mention, the keyboard can be simply removed and it’s now a portable tablet, TV, music player, video chat portal ect. That shiny macbook cannot do any of that. It also cannot simply connect to a external monitor because it only has one port. The new macbook just seems like a far less useful device no matter which way you look at it. In fact the macbook doesn’t even compare well with the Surface Pro 3

  4. The only problem with Apple is their inferior OS.

I will buy Apple products the day they come pre-loaded with the best OS on the planet, that’s none other than Microsoft Windows.
