With the remaster of the original “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” already out, fans have been having a blast with the game and have been praising Activision and their developers for the hard work they’ve put into it. Even though the release was handled poorly in some regards, particularly with how the game was distributed, people were still mostly satisfied with what it has to offer.
And now, quite unsurprisingly, we’re already seeing talks about a potential similar treatment for “Modern Warfare 2”. However, while many players would seemingly enjoy such a release and would readily buy it (at a reasonable price), others are more skeptical towards the idea and don’t seem to want it to happen too much.
The main problem, according to the skeptical fans, is that this could set an annoying trend in the franchise. “Call of Duty” already has a problem with innovation, as Activision have been basically rehashing the same formula over and over again with each game, only changing minor details.
But at least we’re getting some progress – it would be a different story if each new “Call of Duty” in the next few years was just a remake of an older one. Some players remember “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” as their favorite installment in the franchise, and the one that got everything just right, but that still doesn’t mean that the game warrants a remaster.
It would also give Activision another opportunity to repeat the current situation with the remaster of “Call of Duty 4”, which was released as an exclusive bonus for the special edition of the current “Infinity Warfare”. This immediately struck many players as a poor move on Activision’s part, and they were quick to express their disappointment.
Part of the problem was the way most people saw “Infinity Warfare”, as the game already got bad press before it was even launched. While the final release was actually more or less successful, many players felt like they were being cheated by being forced to buy the main game just so they could get their hands on the remaster of the classic.
It’s probably reasonable to expect that Activision will release “Call of Duty 4 Remastered” as a standalone game sooner or later, as there is too much money to be made in this to simply avoid it. But that could actually make things even more difficult for them for a potential remaster of any other game, as it would give players a sign that they just have to wait a few months and they’ll get their standalone copy.
Another interesting detail about the whole situation is how the two new “Call of Duty” games have been performing compared to each other. It’s a bit surprising to see their player numbers at almost the same levels right now, and it actually looks like “Infinity Warfare” has been losing fans on a daily basis. At this rate, there may not be anyone left in the servers when the holidays roll around.
Players digging in the data for “Call of Duty 4 Remastered” have also found some worrying indicators that the game might get paid DLC sooner or later. Or even worse, that it might be subjected to the same “random loot crate” treatment that the latest games in the franchise got. There are clues indicating that new weapons are going to be added to the game, and they might be exclusively locked behind certain requirements.
