Either American actor Ben Affleck is too confident or too worried about the chances in the box-office of the upcoming superhero movie “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” when it officially hits global theaters on March 25, 2016.
In a recent interview, Ben Affleck said that there is a ton of pressure on the movie to succeed given all the hype that it generated since last year. He said that he would be lying if he says that there are no pressure or expectations at all on the movie or on himself since he is playing Batman in the movie, details Variety.
The actor lauded Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara because of his deep involvement in the making of the superhero franchise movie.
Affleck revealed that Tsujihara pushed the film into its 2016 playdate and the Warner Bros studio boss decision is expected to pay off big time, and the whole world will know it in less than five months time.
A turnaround for Warner Bros
According to the actor-director, it is all over the press how 2015 was a topsy-turvy year for Warner Bros but he believes that “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” will help launch a turnaround for the production company.
He confidently said that Warner Bros will have a great year in 2016 because the company is now developing probably the single greatest under-exploited IP asset in entertainment – the DC comic world. Affleck adds that now that the production company is starting to exploit and mine the asset, people are going to see it blossom next year. And when it blossoms, it is going to be massive, he added.
The “Pearl Harbor” actor is impressed with Tsujihara’s foresight, the intelligence of his notes, and the fact that he really cared for the project. Affleck said that Tsujihara is not like some guys, who at his level in the company, would just demand a franchise movie from his production people.
Affleck saw for himself how Tsujihara was willing to spend time with the production people and how he was willing to take a longer time to make the movie to get it right and to make it a film of higher quality.
To be extremely disappointed
There is a lot riding on the success of “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and Affleck was very straightforward and candid when he said that he will be extremely disappointed if the movie does not do well in the box-office when it hit cinemas in March next year, notes Cinema Blend.
But critics believe that what Affleck said may be the biggest understatement of the year because practically everyone in the film industry knows that “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” would be a blockbuster success.
In fact, the movie has become the golden ticket for the film studio because DC is the best shot that Warner Bros has at success in that particular arena.
In stark contrast to Marvel which built the Marvel Cinematic Universe by giving several characters individual films first, Warner Bros is taking the reverse strategy for building the DC Cinematic Universe by using “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” to introduce several major superhero characters who will have their own solo movies in the future. In fact, filming for “Wonder Woman” has already begun according to latest reports.
The same strategy is also to be employed by the Warner Bros movie based on DC comics, the “Suicide Squad.” And then there is the follow-up to “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” which is the two-part movie “Justice League.” All these movies will breed major DC character staples and things are indeed looking up for Warner Bros.
Interestingly, one of the details that superhero fanatics will find odd is that the upcoming movie from Warner Bros will feature only three other DC superhero characters other than Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman.
Unlike the Marvel’s Avengers, which now count more than 10 superhero characters, and will mostly be seen in the upcoming “Captain America: Civil War” minus Thor and the Hulk, the initial formation of the Justice League will include only five superhero characters.
