Saw 8 to be called Jigsaw: Release date confirmed

The eighth piece of the bloody Saw puzzle is slowly coming into place under the name Jigsaw. Here’s what we know about the plot, the cast, the release date and more!

It’s been almost 13 years since the first part of Saw franchise hit the big screen. This bloody tale was based on a story by Leigh Whannell and James Wan. The first part starred Cary Elwes, Monica Potter, Tobin Bell and Danny Glover. The film was shot in 18 days and released in 2004, with a very low budget, and it grossed over $100 million worldwide, making it extremely profitable. It’s unexpected success allowed the studios to go and make a sequel, and then another one, and another one after that – each being a blood bath that thrilled viewers worldwide. Sequels came every year around Halloween until 2010 accumulating box office earnings of incredible $873 million around the globe.

Interestingly, this sadistic and gory series has brought forth a modern era of movies usually crudely referred to as “torture porn” by those who do not understand the terrified fascination that allows some people to find these movies enjoyable.

Now, movie number eight of this franchise is in the works. The production team for this sequel consists of Peter and Michael Sprierig, brothers who helmed Predestination and Daybreakers. The script was written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg – Sorority Row writers. At the moment, the film is in post-production, and it will arrive to cinemas around the globe soon, to bring blood-tinged nostalgia to fans of Jigsaw’s twisted sadistic games.

The title of the eighth installment was supposed to be Saw:Legacy, but in a very interesting move, Lionsgate changed it to Jigsaw, naming the movie after the mastermind behind the horror, this series’s main villain.

Jigsaw is the nickname of John Kramer, the serial killer who is at the centre of every Saw film, man laying out death traps for his victims, because he believes they take life for granted. His victims have to either accomplish a perilous and painful task or make a choice between two awful options to save their own lives. In the other case, the choice that will set the victim free, usually means that someone else will have to be maimed or murdered, so in that scenario, there are two victims, and one of them has no choice at all.

Our favorite villain who makes life worthwhile will once more be portrayed by Tobin Bell. Next to Bell, starring in this film are Laura Vandervoort (you might remember her from her role as Supergirl in Smallvile), Mandela Van Peebles, Shawuan Lewis, Brittany Allen, Matt Passmore, Josiah Black, Michael Bolsvert, James Gomez, Callum Keith Rennie and Hannah Anderson (Reign).

Just like every sequel, this film promises to take things to an entirely new level, but we have yet to see if it is able to fulfill that promise. Interestingly, the new title suggests that the Saw franchise just might have a new beginning, since we all know that its cancer-stricken life affirming murderer died during the seventh part of the franchise. Jigsaw will be placed ten years after the main villain’s death. But, as we all know, the character died in Saw 3, which never stopped him from coming back in flashbacks, so anything could be expected.

The movie has already been rated R for “grisly torture with blood and violence” – just in case someone could mistake it for a jigsaw completion tutorial, which means that new team behind the film will not be “cleaning up the act” and the carnival of terror that made the original so awful you just had to look will be back in all of its glory. The official synopsis for this piece of dark fun is already out:

“Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?”

Our guess is that the real Jigsaw killer, played by Bell, will only appear in flashbacks. Also, thanks to some leaked set photos that reveal a grave robbery will happen in the movie, we are guessing the killer’s corpse might make an appearance as well. Also, since Bell has been very active in promoting the film on social media, he gave us one photo on a roller coaster, so our imaginations are running wild, and we are wondering If the new trap will have something to do with that?

Saw 8Anyhow, if nothing changes, our favorite grizzly horror will make its way back in the most perfect moment – during the Halloween season. The premiere date is set for October 27,2017.

Stoked to see the entry number eight in this epic franchise? We are!
