Orlando Bloom has finally broken his silence about those naked paddle boarding pictures, admitting he was as surprised as anyone to see them splashed all over the internet.
The Lord Of The Rings star, 40, was photographed without his shorts during a trip to Sardinia, Italy with then girlfriend Katy Perry in August last year.
Opening up to Elle Magazine about the incident, which saw images of his manhood go viral on social media, not to mention the many articles dedicated to his naked moment in magazines and papers over the following weeks, the star said it was a case of his paparazzi radar failing him.
“It was extremely surprising,” he said. “I wouldn’t have put myself in that position if I’d thought it would happen.”
Orlando, who decided not to publicly address the hysteria at the time said he had decided to drop his shorts during a moment of freedom, he explained: “I’ve been photographed a million times in a million ways. I have a good radar. We’d been completely alone for five days. Nothing around us. There was no way anyone could get anything. So I had a moment of feeling free.”
Clearly, Orlando wasn’t as alone as he believed. The Hollywood star instead was papped by a photographer and within days they had been published online, initially by the New York Daily News and the Daily Mail causing a meltdown on social media, which only heightened with the release of the uncensored pictures.
While most of the attention was complimentary, Elle asked Orlando if he thought there would have been a more negative reaction to the invasion of privacy had he been a woman.
Bloom joked that he hadn’t thought that “deep” about it adding: ‘”What can I tell you? Note to self: you’re never free. Ha!”
It’s not too much of a surprised that Bloom took the nude scandal so well. A star of the big screen, Orlando has been one of Hollywood’s most high-profile actors for the last two decades and is used to the attention – good and bad.
The British actor not only played Legolas in both the Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit movies but, also as Will Turner in the hugely successful Pirates of The Carribean franchise alongside Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley.
Away from the camera’s the heartthrob’s love life meant he was barely ever out the headlines.
After dating a string of Hollywood beauties including actress Kate Bosworth, Bloom married Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr in 2010.
They welcomed son Flynn soon after tying the knot.
Together the actor and the Australian supermodel made one of the hottest couples in Hollywood and were a permanent feature of the red carpet at award shows and premieres.
The couple’s golden union was short-lived though and in 2013 they split for good.
Commenting on how well they get on, Bloom told Elle Magazine it was essential they remained friends: “Miranda and I have a remarkable relationship. We co-parent really well.”
Kerr, who is now engaged to SnapChat billionaire Evan Spiegel, revealed Orlando had even warned her that the penis pictures were going to be made public last year and joked she asked him what he was thinking by his naked antics.
Speaking to KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O on a trip to Australia just weeks after the photos had emerged, the brunette said: “Oh my God – he texted me and he was like, ‘Um, I’m really embarrassed. Some photos are coming out. Just thought I should let you know.
“And I was like, ‘Hmm… right, what were you thinking? Seriously, what were you thinking?'”
One person who has yet to give her side of the story is Katy Perry, who had been on the same paddleboard as Bloom. In the images, the Roar singer can be seen sitting crossed legged in front of her boyfriend wearing a bikini and seems completely oblivious to his nudity.
While they might have survived through the photo scandal the couple’s romance came to an end in March this year.
Katy and Orlando first sparked romance rumours after getting flirty at a Golden Globes afterparty in January 2016 and were soon seen enjoying romantic dates in Los Angeles including one to watch Adele perform.
Love didn’t last thought and in a joint statement released to the media, claimed they were “taking respectful, loving space”.
Asked about the end of the relationship, Orlando said he was on good terms with Perry, who he has been seen spending time with in social media posts since they confirmed the end of their romance.
“We’re friends, it’s good. We’re all grown-up,” he said, before refusing to divulge why the seemingly happy couple ended.
He added: “It’s between us. It’s better to set an example for kids and show that [break-ups] don’t have to be about hate.”
