Actress, Margot Robbie, has admitted that she actually slapped Leonardo DiCaprio across the face during her audition for The Wolf of Wall Street. A shocker right?
The film based on a true story of Jordan Belfort, a Long Island penny stockbroker who served 22 months in prison for defrauding a huge number of investors in a massive 1990s securities scam was a huge hit.
In the movie, we follow Belfort at the very beginning of his career, we see how badly he wants to succeed, how poorly he is doing in the world he had chosen. And then, in the early 1990s, he teams up with his partner Donny Azoff and starts a brokerage firm Stratford-Oakmont.
Their company grows incredibly quickly from a staff of 20 to a staff of more than 250 and their status in the trading community and Wall Street grows exponentially, to everyone’s surprise. Their status grew so much that companies started filing their initial public offerings through them.
As their status grew, so did the amount of substances they abused, and so had their lies. They drew attention like no other, throwing lavish parties for their staff when they hit the jackpot on high trades. This ultimately lead to Belfort being featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine, being called “The Wolf Of Wall St.”
With the FBI onto his schemes, he devises new ways to cover his tracks and watch his fortune grow. Belfort ultimately comes up with a scheme to stash their cash in a European bank. But with the FBI watching them like a hawk, how long will Belfort and Azoff be able to maintain their elaborate wealth and luxurious lifestyles?
This movie earned $392 million, and numerous awards.
One of the main characters throughout the story is Margot Robbie’s character. This role brought global fame to this young actress, and the tale of how it happened is a really peculiar one.
In an interview Mrs. Margot Robbie actually confessed that she got so much into her role during the audition for the role of Leo’s second wife that she literally slapped his face. Thankfully, the outburst of emotion she portrayed was done so well that DiCaprio loved it and was not offended in the slightest. In fact, it is quite possibly the reason she got the role in an instant classic “The Wolf Of Wall Street”
Right now, Margot is already a well-established actress with huge movies behind her, however, when she slapped Leo, her path to fame was in the earliest stages of development and she was getting desperate to get something out of the audition, the slap was the only thing that came to her mind when she was trying to figure out what she can do to stand out from the other actresses. But, we shouldn’t rephrase this too much, better let her tell the story herself:
‘You have literally 30 seconds left in this room and if you don’t do something impressive nothing will ever come of it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance, just take it.’ And so I start screaming at him and he’s yelling back at me. And he’s really scary. I can barely keep up.
And he ends it saying, ‘You should be happy to have a husband like me. Now get over here and kiss me.’ So I walk up really close to his face and then I’m like, ‘Maybe I should kiss him. When else am I ever going to get a chance to kiss Leo DiCaprio, ever?
Margot also admitted she was scared senseless as soon as she slapped one of the most popular actors of all time. When she realized what she had done it dawned on her that she might just get arrested, or, at the very least shown out of the Hollywood for good. However, turns out that Leo loved it, in fact, he even took it as far as asking her to hit him again.
In the end, probably to avoid injuries, the movie went with a milder version of the scene with Margot throwing water in his face instead of a full on slap. Turns out, some sass can get you pretty far when you are dealing with an actor who loves method acting. Ever since her career skyrocketed, and, even if the movie Suicide Squad didn’t sit well with a lot of people, everyone LOVED her portrayal of the Joker’s girl, Harley Quinn.
