Lemon, Baking Soda, and Weight Loss

Lemon water has been a household weight-loss remedy for many celebrities which has the general public flocking to give it a try.  Lemons are known for their high antioxidant content which aids in the repairing of cells.  They also contain high amounts of vitamin C and potassium which lowers blood pressure and decreases the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Lemon water is particularly popular for weight-loss because water naturally boosts the metabolism and the lemon juice’s acids slows down digestion, which results in steady insulin levels.  A spike in insulin levels is caused by fast digesting foods and signals the body to store excess energy as fat for later use.  Therefore, maintaining steady insulin levels is ideal for limiting the amount of fat stored in the adipose tissue.

Theoretically, drinking lemon water will allow one to continue eating high GI foods without the risk of gaining weight.  Another benefit of lemon juice is that it stimulates the liver to release waste and detoxifies the body.  A healthy liver and digestive system improves the chances of weight loss by allowing the body to absorb all of the nutrients it requires to burn fat.

Adding baking soda to the pre-breakfast lemon water drink is gaining popularity and touts additional weight-loss benefits.  The household staple is believed to help control the pH level of the body because of its alkaline function.  Expert George M Wolverton stated that an alkaline body will turn fat into muscle and, in contrast, an acidic body will burn muscle and store fat.  This promotes the idea that consuming a high alkaline substance, like baking soda, will turn the body into a fat burning machine.

The main premise for this conclusion is that excess acid in the body will be stored as fat and baking soda will remedy this by neutralising the acid in the body.
