The Crystal Maze start date has officially been confirmed!

The renewal of the Crystal Maze has been given an official date by Channel 4. The first episode of the series will hit the screens on June 23 at 9pm.

Channel 4 tweeted the show’s return on June 8 with a picture of the host, Richard Ayoade. The series is confirmed to consist of twenty episodes including ‘charity celebrity specials’.

The show was first launched in 1990 and hosted by Richard O’Brien. It attracted an audience of more than 4 million viewers due to its adventurous, multiple challenges that included teams of five. The goal was to win crystals that would give the teams time to grasp cash in the show’s last round.

O’Brien was known for his Victorian sense of fashion and playing harmonica while the contestants attempted to complete the tasks. He was replaced by Edward Tudor-Pole in 1993 and hosted until the show ended in 1995.

The series was confirmed for release this year due to the success of a Stand Up To Cancer Special last year. It was hosted by The Office writer and star Stephen Merchant. However, he will be replaced by Richard Ayoade, who rose to fame after appearing in the Might Boosh and The IT Crowd.

The 20 sixty-minute episodes will be filmed in Bristol in a cleverly built maze. It is 30,000 square foot in size and is designed by the original creator of the maze, James Dillon.

Speaking about the challenges the contestants will have to face, the official website reported that, “They will face a range of skill, mystery, physical and mental challenges to win crystals that equate to time in the final test – the legendary Crystal Dome.”

The series will require the teams of five contestants to navigate Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Futuristic zones before arriving at the Crystal Dome.

The renewed series will also feature Adam Buxton and Jessica Hynes as two new characters in the series.

Adam will play the role of Jarhead who he will use his mind to release a crystal for the team if one player from a team is able to solve a trio of riddles. On the other hand, BAFTA award-winning actress Jessica Hynes will play the role of a knight defending the kingdom of the Medieval zone.

The Crystal MazeThe first team of the Crystal Maze, who will be raising funds for Stand Up To Cancer, has officially been announced. It includes celebrities from Strictly Come Dancing, The Last Leg and TOWIE: Ore Oduba, Vicky Pattison, Alex Brooker, Louie Spence, and Lydia Bright.
